8 Ways To Beat Airport Boredom

Every frequent traveller fears it: Long layovers and flight delays! There are few things as boring as being stuck at the airport waiting for a plane. You can’t leave the airport, and you have nothing to do. So, you need to get creative to keep yourself entertained.

Check out our 8 ways to beat airport boredom

1 Go shopping:  Don’t question whether you are actually saving money on purchases of duty free goods. Just pretend your credit card has no limit (or borrow your boyfriend’s credit card).

2 Sing and dance like nobody is watching: Take on your headphones, select your favourite playlist and go wild. This might even be a way to refinance your airport shopping excess. Just pass your hat around to collect money.

3 Eat as much as you can: Check out the food court and go for the unhealthiest junk food you can possibly find. Don’t count calories. Don’t forget to order dessert. Bikini bodies are overrated anyways.

4 People-watch:  This actually means checking to see if there are any attractive people around. As soon as you spot a hot guy/chic, make yourself believe that you’re the most magnetic person in the whole airport and try a stupid pick up line (such as “Do I know you? Cause you look a lot like my next girlfriend/boyfriend”).

5 Create a Facebook Story:  We all agree that Facebook Stories is the most annoying social media feature ever. You never used it? Now it’s the perfect time to give it a try and annoy your friends by showing how “exciting” it is to wait at the airport.

6 Update your latest FindPenguins trip: Finally, a useful tipp to kill time at the airport. Check out your FindPenguins profile. Update your latest trip and order a photo book with all your travel pics, routes, stats and comments.

7 Discover your next travel destination:  It’s never to early to start planning your next trip! Get inspired by the FindPenguins community’s adventures.

8 Last but not least: Take a nap. Make sure to not oversleep your flight’s departure though.

A Guide To Responsible Bargaining While Travelling

I am not a fan of bargaining at all and I probably have the worst poker face in the world. So, for me, haggling on holidays is nothing but stressful. However, I also don’t want to get ripped off when buying goods at a local market or negotiating prices for taxis or Tuk Tuks. In addition, paying much more than you technically should may lead to a culture of overcharging and inflation, which can throw a developing country’s economy out of balance. Nevertheless, even the poorest traveller is a rich person in the Third World and ruthless haggling is one of the greatest sins of irresponsible travellers.

Therefore, the art of conscientious bargaining on holidays is to be generous to the needy but to haggle hard when someone tries to rip you off.

Our tips for fair and respectful haggling:

1. Go for a fair deal (not the lowest possible price)!

A fair deal implies a fair price, but what is a fair price? So, the frist step to responsible haggling is to have an appropriate price in your mind. Therefore, it helps to compare a few basic prices to develop a feeling for local price levels. It is also useful to find out about income levels to get a better understanding of how much locals can actually afford to pay for a certain item or service (but keep in mind that it’s ok for Westerners to pay a little extra than locals would have to).
Then it gets easier to set in your head how much you are willing to pay for a good or service before you start to bargain.

2. Be polite and keep it fun!

Keeping it fun is hard for someone who just doesn’t get the joy of bargaining. However, being polite is an easy one for all of us. So, just open the conversation with a friendly greeting in the local language (which demonstrates that you’ve made an effort). Take your time and always smile to keep the whole conversation light and fun. Also bear in mind that if you don’t haggle the seller thinks there’s something wrong, so bargaining is definitively the right thing to do.

3. Don’t suggest the first price!

This is super important and a very helpful rule: The first one who says a price, loses. So, let the seller set the price first. Then it’s best to wait until he drops it a few times before you suggest an amount. This tactic helps to avoid opening too high (the vendor will accept with a gleeful smile), or too low (the seller may not even enter into any discussion).

4. Buy more to get a better deal!

The more items you buy, the better deal you will get. So, make sure to look around and pick out a few items and then ask the vendor for the best deal.

5. Walk away!

If you and the seller cannot agree on a price, it’s time to tell the seller your final offer. Then walk away slowly to gives the seller time to change his mind and call you back.

6. Don’t keep bargaining once the deal is agreed upon!

As soon as you agreed on a deal the haggling game is done. To re-start bargaining all over again is rude and disrespectful.

7. Keep Cool!

Sometimes you just won’t agree on a price. Keep cool, shake the trader’s hand and walk away with a friendly face.

New Zealand with kids: Discover one of the world’s best family holiday destinations!

No question that travelling with small children has its challenges, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop travelling at all – especially if you love it. There is nothing more beautiful about raising kids than passing on your passion to the next generation. So, don’t hesitate to get ready for your next family travel adventure!

New Zealand, for example, is a fantastic destination for a family holiday. Even though the 20 hours plane ride from Europe may act as a deterrent, the country attracts families with its spectacular natural scenery and mild temperatures as well as good medical care and the absence of dangerous wildlife. One of the best ways to explore the country’s beauty with a young family is a camper van road trip.

Here some of our favourite destinations on the North & South Island that your family shouldn’t miss:

Piha Beach (North Island): Piha is a laid-back seaside village with a scenic surf beach. It’s quite close to Auckland airport (approx. 40 minutes by car), which makes it the perfect place to relax from the flight and to get rid of jet lag. Don’t miss to check out Piha Store for its delicious pies and coffees.

Piha Beach, NZ

Rotorua (North Island):  Rotorua is known for its bubbling mud pools, shooting geysers and hot springs. If your family hasn’t seen geothermal activity before, then a visit to Wai-O-Tapu is a must do on the North Island.

Hobbiton Movie Set (North Island):  Make the whole family happy with a guided walk through the hobbit village. Be sure to book your movie set tour in advance as it can get very busy in this part of Middle Earth, not just during high season.

Waiheke Island (North Island): The small island of Waiheke is a 40-minutes ferry ride from downtown Auckland and a haven of beautiful vineyards. “Wild on Waiheke” for example is a very family-friendly vineyard that offers various fun activities, a playground, restaurant and a craft beer brewery.

Marlborough (South Island):  Cruise the Marlborough Sounds to enjoy the unique interplay between the land, sea and light. Or explore New Zealand’s largest wine growing region and the source of the country’s flagship Sauvignon Blanc wines (don’t miss to taste a glass of Cloudy Bay Sauv Blanc).

Golden Bay (South Island) Motueka Holiday Park at Golden Bay is one of the most beautiful camping grounds on the South Island. Stay there for a couple of days to go hiking at Able Tasman National Park and to visit close by Wharariki Beach to see baby seals.

Golden Bay

Wanaka (South Island):  Located in the alps of the South Island, Lake Wanaka is the ultimate spot for lots of family outdoor activities such as hiking, jet boating, fishing, horse trekking, canyoning or kayaking. Even though the town itself is quite touristy, the beauty of the surrounding nature is definitively worth it to stay for 2-3 nights.
