No question that travelling with small children has its challenges, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop travelling at all – especially if you love it. There is nothing more beautiful about raising kids than passing on your passion to the next generation. So, don’t hesitate to get ready for your next family travel adventure!
New Zealand, for example, is a fantastic destination for a family holiday. Even though the 20 hours plane ride from Europe may act as a deterrent, the country attracts families with its spectacular natural scenery and mild temperatures as well as good medical care and the absence of dangerous wildlife. One of the best ways to explore the country’s beauty with a young family is a camper van road trip.
Here some of our favourite destinations on the North & South Island that your family shouldn’t miss:
Piha Beach (North Island): Piha is a laid-back seaside village with a scenic surf beach. It’s quite close to Auckland airport (approx. 40 minutes by car), which makes it the perfect place to relax from the flight and to get rid of jet lag. Don’t miss to check out Piha Store for its delicious pies and coffees.
Rotorua (North Island): Rotorua is known for its bubbling mud pools, shooting geysers and hot springs. If your family hasn’t seen geothermal activity before, then a visit to Wai-O-Tapu is a must do on the North Island.

Marlborough (South Island): Cruise the Marlborough Sounds to enjoy the unique interplay between the land, sea and light. Or explore New Zealand’s largest wine growing region and the source of the country’s flagship Sauvignon Blanc wines (don’t miss to taste a glass of Cloudy Bay Sauv Blanc).
Golden Bay (South Island): Motueka Holiday Park at Golden Bay is one of the most beautiful camping grounds on the South Island. Stay there for a couple of days to go hiking at Able Tasman National Park and to visit close by Wharariki Beach to see baby seals.
Wanaka (South Island): Located in the alps of the South Island, Lake Wanaka is the ultimate spot for lots of family outdoor activities such as hiking, jet boating, fishing, horse trekking, canyoning or kayaking. Even though the town itself is quite touristy, the beauty of the surrounding nature is definitively worth it to stay for 2-3 nights.
